Mozart's "Ah, vous dirai-je Maman" variations have become one of his most popular piano works. The piece caught on quickly after his death, as evidenced by numerous handwritten copies and prints. While the exact origins of the work are unclear, scholars can now confidently date it to 1781, when Mozart was establishing himself as a prominent piano teacher in Vienna. The variations remain excellent teaching material to this day. This new edition from Henle has been thoroughly revised and includes an informative preface by Mozart expert Ulrich Konrad. Additionally, Henle has published a facsimile of Mozart's original manuscript (HN 3213).

In 1771, during a highly successful tour of Italy, Mozart was commissioned to compose a dramatic serenata for the wedding of Archduke Ferdinand. This work eclipsed Hasse's new opera, which was also intended for the same event, leading Hasse to reportedly remark, "This boy will cause us all to be forgotten." That same year, Mozart created his first divertimento (K.113), marking the beginning of a prolific output of twenty-three such pieces throughout his life, all while he was still under the age of 16.
