Description

During his youth, Richard Strauss composed a large number of piano works, including numerous sonatas. However, it was only the Sonata in B-minor that he deemed significant enough to publish. Composed in two versions between the winter of 1880 and spring of 1881, this sonata was published a year later. In this work, Strauss clearly follows the compositional style of German Romanticism, with the two middle movements directly recalling Mendelssohn's "Songs Without Words" and scherzos. This edition presents the first Urtext publication of this demanding piano sonata.
