Description

The Four Songs op. 27, which Richard Strauss composed as a wedding gift for his wife Pauline de Ahna on September 10, 1894, hold a special place among his many works written for her. Unlike Strauss' earlier song cycles, this set combines poems by different poets - Karl Henckell's "Ruhe, meine Seele," Heinrich Hart's "Cäcilie," and two texts by John Henry Mackay, "Heimliche Aufforderung" and "Morgen" - into a diverse and expressive collection. Pauline, a renowned concert singer, frequently performed her husband's songs, with the impressionistic "Morgen" becoming the best known of Strauss' over 200 vocal works. For the Urtext edition, the composer's original autograph, now preserved in New York, was carefully studied alongside the first published edition from 1894.

Description

The eight songs of Richard Strauss' Op. 10 Lieder, set to texts by the now little-known poet Hermann von Gilm, hold a special place in the composer's vocal output. Composed in 1885, this was the first time Strauss had set an entire song cycle to the words of a single poet. The resulting collection, published for the first time that year, contains some of Strauss' most beloved and frequently performed Lieder, such as "Zueignung," "Die Nacht," and "Allerseelen." Though these individual numbers have become staples, the cycle as a whole, with its well-crafted structure, also merits closer examination and performance. In choosing this highly Romantic subject of unrequited love, the aspiring Strauss consciously aligned himself with the Lied tradition stretching from Schubert to Wolf, exploring the diverse facets of the theme.

Description

The eight songs after texts by the now little-known poet Hermann von Gilm, composed by Richard Strauss in 1885, hold a special place in his Lieder corpus. This was the first time Strauss composed an entire set of songs on texts by a single poet, compiling them into a single opus that would also be published. Some of the songs, like "Zueignung," "Die Nacht," and "Allerseelen," are among Strauss' most popular, but the well-structured cycle as a whole deserves closer examination and performance. By choosing the Romantic theme of unrequited love and exploring its diverse facets, the aspiring composer consciously aligned himself with the tradition of composers from Schubert to Wolf.

Strauss: Der Rosenkavalier (Vocal Score)

Author : Richard Strauss

Description

One of the greatest operatic masterpieces, Der Rosenkavalier, by Richard Strauss, is reprinted in this low-cost edition straight from the definitive vocal score written by Otto Singer, approved by Strauss, and published by Adolph F. Stner in 1911, the year the opera debuted in Dresden. The most well-known opera by the Bavarian composer is Der Rosenkavalier. The Romantic movement's aesthetics were to be fully realized in his symphonic poems, operas, and songs. The opera was an instant hit and Strauss's most successful collaboration with the renowned Austrian poet Hugo von Hofmannsthal. It was a brilliant and bittersweet celebration of love. The vocal parts, the verbal text, and a piano reduction of the full orchestral score make up the vocal score.

Strauss: Horn Concerto in Eb Major, No. 2 SE

Author : Richard Strauss

Description

In the twilight of his life, Richard Strauss composed a second concerto for horn and orchestra, again in E-flat major, around sixty years after his first horn concerto. This late masterwork, the sublimely beautiful Horn Concerto No. 2, gives no indication of the oppressive circumstances of Strauss' poor health and the ongoing Second World War. Premiered in 1943 by Gottfried von Freiberg under the baton of Karl Böhm, the concerto remained unpublished until after Strauss' death, when it finally appeared in print in London. This critical new edition, based on the autograph sources and performance materials, was long overdue. The editor, Hans Pizka, former principal horn of the Bavarian State Opera in Munich, gained first-hand insights into the concerto's performance tradition and genesis as a pupil of Gottfried von Freiberg.

At just 18 years old, Richard Strauss composed a captivating horn concerto that has become a beloved staple in the instrument's repertoire. To this day, the concerto is cherished by horn players worldwide, ranking alongside Mozart's masterworks as an essential piece. Peter Damm, the former principal horn of the Staatskapelle Dresden and acclaimed soloist, has performed the concerto over 170 times and conducted pivotal research on its origins. Damm's Urtext edition, prepared after reviewing all surviving sources, is considered the definitive version. Additionally, a practical study edition of the orchestral score is available, eliminating numerous errors from the initial publication.
