Description

The Four Songs op. 27, which Richard Strauss composed as a wedding gift for his wife Pauline de Ahna on September 10, 1894, hold a special place among his many works written for her. Unlike Strauss' earlier song cycles, this set combines poems by different poets - Karl Henckell's "Ruhe, meine Seele," Heinrich Hart's "Cäcilie," and two texts by John Henry Mackay, "Heimliche Aufforderung" and "Morgen" - into a diverse and expressive collection. Pauline, a renowned concert singer, frequently performed her husband's songs, with the impressionistic "Morgen" becoming the best known of Strauss' over 200 vocal works. For the Urtext edition, the composer's original autograph, now preserved in New York, was carefully studied alongside the first published edition from 1894.

Description

The Four Songs op. 27, which Richard Strauss composed as a wedding gift for his wife Pauline de Ahna in 1894, hold a special place among his many works written for her. Unlike Strauss's earlier song cycles, op. 27 is not limited to a single poet; instead, it combines poems by Karl Henckell, Heinrich Hart, and John Henry Mackay into a diverse collection of emotive songs. The initial high voice publication was later supplemented with transposed versions for middle and low registers during the composer's lifetime - a common practice for Strauss's songs. This Henle Urtext edition for medium voice continues that tradition, making this beloved song cycle accessible to a wide range of vocalists.

Description

The eight songs in Richard Strauss' "Opus 10" hold a unique place in his Lieder corpus. Composed in 1885 with texts by the now little-known poet Hermann von Gilm, this was the first time Strauss had set an entire song cycle by a single poet. The resulting work, published as a collection, contains some of Strauss' most beloved songs, like "Zueignung," "Die Nacht," and "Allerseelen." While these individual numbers are extremely popular, the cycle as a whole, with its thoughtful structure, also deserves closer examination and more frequent performance. In aligning himself with the Romantic song tradition of composers like Schubert and Wolf, the young Strauss skillfully explores the diverse facets of unrequited love.

Description

The eight songs of Richard Strauss' Op. 10 Lieder, set to texts by the now little-known poet Hermann von Gilm, hold a special place in the composer's vocal output. Composed in 1885, this was the first time Strauss had set an entire song cycle to the words of a single poet. The resulting collection, published for the first time that year, contains some of Strauss' most beloved and frequently performed Lieder, such as "Zueignung," "Die Nacht," and "Allerseelen." Though these individual numbers have become staples, the cycle as a whole, with its well-crafted structure, also merits closer examination and performance. In choosing this highly Romantic subject of unrequited love, the aspiring Strauss consciously aligned himself with the Lied tradition stretching from Schubert to Wolf, exploring the diverse facets of the theme.

The eight songs after texts by the now little-known poet Hermann von Gilm, composed by Richard Strauss in 1885, hold a special place in his Lieder corpus. Some of the songs, like "Zueignung," "Die Nacht," and "Allerseelen," are among Strauss' most popular, but the well-structured cycle as a whole deserves closer examination and performance. Strauss: Andante in C Major

Author : Richard Strauss

Description

In the summer of 1888, Richard Strauss, while engaged in the composition of his tone poem Don Juan, created a brief Andante for his father, Franz Strauss, a prominent horn player and member of the Munich Court Opera. This Andante was meant to serve as the slow movement of an incomplete sonata, which Strauss ultimately never finished, much to the disappointment of horn players. The work remained unpublished until 1973, when G. Henle Publishers released a new Urtext edition, based on the original autograph manuscript from the Munich Public Library. The Andante presents moderate difficulty, making it well-suited for educational purposes and as a compelling piece for Romantic performance.
