Description

Strauss' violin sonata, composed between the summer and autumn of 1887, stands among his most popular chamber works to this day. The outer movements feature a piano setting and modulations that depart from the intimate mold of chamber music, hinting at the sensational symphonic poems he was writing concurrently. Sandwiched between these technically demanding outer movements is the slow, "Improvisation" middle movement - a song without words that enjoyed great popularity around 1900 in household and salon concerts. This Urtext edition was edited by Ulrich Krämer, with Arabella Steinbacher providing markings for the violin part and Michael Korstick for the piano.
