The "little Suite" titled Children's Corner was published in 1908 and dedicated to the composer's then three-year-old daughter, with the affectionate inscription "To my beloved little Chouchou with the tender excuses of her father for what follows below." The first movement, "Doctor Gradus ad Parnassum," alludes to a study by Muzio Clementi. The titles of the subsequent movements (nos. 2-6) reflect Debussy's fascination with English culture. While the music evokes childlike fantasy, it requires a talented amateur performer. The well-known sixth movement, "Golliwogg's Cakewalk," is written in a ragtime style that showcases Debussy's lighthearted approach to popular musical trends.
