Ravel held Debussy's famous orchestral work in the highest esteem, going so far as to express in an interview his fervent wish to die to the sounds of this "unique marvel in the whole of music." Since Debussy had already published a two-piano version, Ravel undertook an arrangement for piano four-hands in 1910, which was published that same year by Fromont in Paris and made an impact in its own right. For this Henle Urtext edition, we have recruited Debussy specialist Denis Herlin as editor to evaluate all available sources. The fingerings were provided by Andreas Groethuysen of the renowned Tal & Groethuysen Duo.
Even non-virtuoso pianists can immerse themselves in the dreamlike world of French Impressionism, thanks to Debussy's masterful miniatures. Though simple in technical execution, these works possess a poetic depth, as exemplified by the renowned Clair de lune - just one of many such gems in this collection. And for those who diligently work through this volume, the reward is the opportunity to perform the grand concert piece La cathédrale engloutie, the final work included.
In 1891, Debussy's early piano piece, Ballade slave, was published by Choudens. Over a decade later, in 1903, Debussy had the work re-engraved by Fromont in a slightly revised form, during which he deleted the word "slave" from the title. This change highlighted the narrative character of the piece more prominently.
