Description
The Fourth Hungarian Rhapsody, published in 1853, is based on a previously released piano piece known as a Hungarian National Melody, much like the third rhapsody. In his editing process, Liszt amplified the typical contrast between the slow first section and the fast second part across most of the series. This contrast is exemplified by a majestic courtship dance with chromatic ornamentation followed by a climactic, staccato octave passage reminiscent of Liszt's demanding etudes, culminating in a brilliant conclusion.
Additionally, the autograph was consulted for the first time in creating this Urtext edition. Mária Eckhardt provided the preface once again, and Vincenzo Maltempo, a leading expert on Liszt's rhapsodies, contributed the fingerings.
