Liszt: Hungarian Rhapsody No. 10

RM 67.50

Description

The Hungarian Rhapsody No. 10, released in 1853, draws inspiration from a work by Béni Egressy, a prominent figure in Hungarian music who led a renowned gypsy band during that era. In the spring of 1846, while Liszt was touring Hungary, Egressy composed a piece to honor him upon his arrival in Pest. Liszt, in turn, showcased this composition multiple times, albeit with his own unique interpretation, as noted in contemporary reports. This interaction likely marked the beginning of Liszt's extensive reimagining process that ultimately led to the creation of Hungarian Rhapsody No. 10, characterized by the quintessential "style hongrois." The piece evolves from a simple rhythmic motif into a grand crescendo, featuring interludes of recitative and cadenzas, culminating in a highly virtuosic finale. For this Urtext edition, which utilizes the surviving autograph for the first time, two distinguished Liszt experts have contributed: Mária Eckhardt for the preface and Vincenzo Maltempo for the fingerings.
