Description

. In the twilight of his life, Richard Strauss reflected on his youth by composing a second horn concerto for orchestra in Eb major, approximately sixty years after his initial work for the instrument. This exquisite late composition, which does not reveal the burdens of Strauss' declining health or the turmoil of the Second World War, was first performed in 1943 by Gottfried von Freiberg, conducted by Karl Böhm. The concerto was published posthumously in London, necessitating a critical new edition based on the original manuscripts and performance materials, which had long been awaited. Hans Pizka, the editor and former principal horn of the Bavarian State Opera, gained valuable insights into the concerto's performance tradition and development as a student of Gottfried von Freiberg. Additionally, the highly accessible piano reduction by Johannes Umbreit serves as an excellent resource for both teaching and performance.
