Description
In 1892, Rachmaninoff composed a prelude in C-sharp minor that quickly gained worldwide fame. Over the next two decades, he went on to create two additional collections of preludes, which were published together as a complete volume in 1911.
Modeled after the prelude cycles of Chopin, Scriabin, and J.S. Bach, Rachmaninoff's 24 preludes span all major and minor keys. However, unlike the systematic key arrangements of his predecessors, Rachmaninoff's preludes are not organized in a strict tonal sequence. This collection represents a culminating achievement of the late Romantic piano repertoire - a masterpiece that no pianist can afford to overlook.
