In 1838, Clara wrote to Robert, stating, "I am endlessly looking forward to the second sonata. Your whole being is so clearly expressed in it." However, in the same letter, she encouraged him to revise the last movement, which ultimately provided the composition with a completely new finale.

The first two movements were also reworked several times. This new edition provides detailed information on the complicated genesis of the work. The musical text is followed not only by the original, technically demanding final movement, but also the model for the second movement - Schumann's piano arrangement of one of his own songs, "In the Autumn."
