Description
This piano rondo, composed between 1794 and 1795, is widely recognized by the nickname “The rage over the lost penny.” It is important to note that this title was not assigned by Beethoven himself but was later inscribed on the manuscript by another individual. In his original title, Beethoven highlighted the piece's “Hungarian” character, although he used the term “Ingharese” instead of the correct “all’ungharese,” which underscores the playful essence of this lively composition. Robert Schumann insightfully commented that “There can hardly be anything more amusing than this little tale. I had to laugh from the beginning to the end when I played it for the first time recently.” The Urtext edition of this well-loved work was revised by Beethoven expert Joanna Cobb Biermann, incorporating the most recent scholarly findings, while Chinese pianist Haochen Zhang contributed his own fingerings for the piece.
