Description

The Fifteen Variations (with Fugue) op. 35, composed in 1802, are predominantly recognized by the title “Eroica Variations,” as the theme is also featured in the finale of the Third Symphony. Alongside its counterpart, opus 34, this work signifies a pivotal moment in the development of character variations. The composer took great pride in informing his publisher that both pieces were “arranged in a truly quite new fashion.” For the first time, the Eroica Variations are presented in a standalone edition. The musical text of the Urtext edition, which includes a comprehensive foreword and commentary, has been prepared based on the later Critical Apparatus of the Beethoven Complete Edition. The fingering has been provided by the distinguished pianist Ian Fountain.
