Description

The connection between Handel and fugues may not be the first thing that comes to mind when thinking of Baroque keyboard music. Yet, in addition to incorporating fugues into his larger works, Handel also composed standalone fugues dating back to his time in Hamburg. Our edition presents the well-known Six Fugues (HWV 605–610) alongside two additional isolated fugues (HWV 611 and 612). Interestingly, Handel later reused some of these fugues in his concerti grossi, the oratorio "Israel in Egypt," and a trio sonata, where they have become more widely recognized than the original compositions. Notably, Handel's fugues were largely notated without ornaments, and our edition deliberately reproduces them in this original form, providing performers the flexibility to incorporate their own interpretive embellishments.
