Description
The twelve "London Symphonies" represent the sublime culmination of Haydn's symphonic oeuvre. Composed for the London impresario Johann Peter Salomon, Haydn himself conducted the premieres of these works during his extended stays in the English capital in 1791/92 and 1794/95.
The energetic, surging Symphony No. 102 in B-flat major is part of the final trio of symphonies premiered in early 1795. Notably, Haydn omits the clarinets that typically feature in his late symphonic works. The instrumentation of the Adagio movement is also distinctive, with muted trumpets and timpani.
This study edition adheres to the musical text of the authoritative Haydn Complete Edition, ensuring the highest scholarly standards. An informative preface and concise Critical Report make this score an invaluable companion for both seasoned Haydn devotees and budding fans alike.
