Description
The extraordinary popularity of Grieg's first two Lyric Pieces collections (Opus 12 and 38) led to differing perspectives between the composer and his publisher. Grieg wanted to call his third book "Spring Songs" to avoid the impression of a formulaic series, but the publisher insisted on maintaining the established "Lyric Pieces" brand name - and prevailed. This decision proved immensely successful, as the Lyric Pieces, particularly Opus 12 and 43, went on to enjoy tremendous and enduring commercial success, with the publisher proudly reporting to Grieg years later that they were selling "like hot cakes".
