This volume compiles two of Grieg's early piano collections, forming an attractive introductory book of his characterful compositions. The Lyric Pieces, published when Grieg was just 24 years old, are among his most accessible piano works, representing a deliberate effort to provide beginner pianists with melodic and approachable music.
Edvard Grieg's "Lyric Pieces" were a kind of poetic piano diary. Between 1867 and 1901, he composed 66 short character pieces, published in ten books. Well-known works like "Wedding Day at Troldhaugen," "March of the Dwarfs," and "To the Spring" are among Grieg's most famous. Alongside these virtuosic compositions, the collection also includes numerous simpler dances and melodies suitable for early piano students. Until now, only five individual books from the series were available from Henle (HN 619, 627, 644, 681, 713). This new collected volume includes the complete "Lyric Pieces," with fingerings provided by Norwegian pianist and Grieg specialist Einar Steen-Nøkleberg.
This series aims to familiarize experienced piano students with significant works from a diverse range of composers. Comprising seven volumes, it features some of the most accessible and beloved pieces in the repertoire, accompanied by informative texts, performance notes, and comprehensive biographies of the composers. The edition tailored for intermediate pianists includes selections such as Elfin-Dance, Op. 12, No. 4; Puck, Op. 71, No. 3; and Waltz, Op. 12, No. 2, spanning a total of 16 pages.
Grieg's second book of Lyric Pieces, published 16 years after the first, quickly matched the immense popularity of the original collection. Notably, the initial title pages still referred to the works as "Little Pieces", even as the compositions in the second book grew longer, more complex, and technically challenging, departing from the simplicity and brevity that defined the first volume.
