Description

Beethoven's cantatas are often regarded as some of his lesser-known works today; however, they held considerable significance for the composer during their time, serving as typical incidental music for various social and political events. Composed in 1790 while Beethoven was still residing in Bonn, the two Kaiser cantatas, WoO 87 and 88, unfortunately went unperformed throughout the composer's lifetime. It was not until a century later that scholars rediscovered these pieces, revealing their profound emotional depth. In contrast, the cantata "The Glorious Moment," created for a state ceremony marking the end of the war in 1814, premiered in Vienna to great public acclaim. Its hymn, "I Am Europe, No More a City," resonates with contemporary political relevance. This practical study edition presents the musical text from the Beethoven Complete Edition, accompanied by an insightful preface from Beethoven scholar Ernst Herttrich, offering a valuable opportunity to explore lesser-known aspects of Beethoven's work.
