Description
Beethoven composed a total of 32 piano sonatas, with Volume 1, edited by Stewart Gordon, featuring the first eight (Op. 2, Nos. 1-3; Op. 7; Op. 10, Nos. 1-3; and Op. 13, known as "Pathétique"), created between 1795 and 1799. As the original manuscripts are no longer available, this edition relies on the first publications produced by various engravers in Vienna. Dr. Gordon explores numerous subjects, including Beethoven's biography, the characteristics and limitations of contemporary pianos, his techniques in articulation and ornamentation, and the ongoing debate surrounding the definitive interpretation of his works. This critical edition provides valuable performance insights, including fingering suggestions and ornament realizations, while also acknowledging alternative interpretations from other editors, thus equipping both students and teachers with the necessary tools for informed performance choices.
