Description
Beethoven composed a total of 32 piano sonatas, with Volume 2, edited by Stewart Gordon, featuring Sonatas 9 through 15 (Op. 14, Nos. 1–2; Op. 22; Op. 26; Op. 27, Nos. 1–2; and Op. 28), all written between 1798 and 1801 and published shortly thereafter. Among the sonatas included in this volume, autographs are available for Op. 26, Op. 27, No. 2 (though the first and last pages are missing), and Op. 28. This edition draws upon these autographs as well as the first editions released by various engravers in Vienna. Dr. Gordon explores numerous topics, such as Beethoven's life, the limitations of contemporary pianos, his techniques in articulation and ornamentation, and the ongoing challenge of establishing a definitive interpretation of his works. The edition provides valuable performance insights, including fingering suggestions and ornament realizations, while also noting alternative interpretations from other editors, thus equipping students and teachers with the necessary tools for informed performance choices.
