Description

Between 1773 and 1779, Mozart created most of his compositions for solo string instruments and orchestra. Particularly significant in this context are the years 1773 and 1775, during which the five concertos for violin and orchestra were composed, along with several individual movements for the same arrangement.

The causes for this surge of activity in this field can be attributed partly to the reality that Mozart, who remained in the role of concertmaster to the Prince-Archbishop, was either compelled or motivated to create such pieces for special events throughout this extended time in Salzburg. Another reason was undoubtedly the opportunity to experiment with all the new compositional methods learned during his third visit to Italy and his several-month stay in Vienna from July to September 1773.
