Description
The circumstances surrounding the creation of these poetic "Soirée Pieces" (as they were originally titled) are quite surprising. In 1849, Dresden was gripped by violent political upheaval that ultimately forced Schumann to flee with his wife Clara to the countryside. Yet, this tumultuous backdrop is nowhere evident in the serene, idyllic character of these three pieces, which instead convey a longing for harmony and seclusion. Originally conceived for the clarinet, the works were accompanied by alternative parts for violin and cello even in the initial publication. We have subjected our editions of these pieces to a thorough critical review and include detailed editorial notes.
