Description

1873 marked a pivotal year for Dvorák. Stung by the rejection of his opera "The King and the Charcoal Burner," he sought to chart a new direction for his compositions. That same year, he completed his String Quartet in F minor, op. 9, intending it to signal a move away from the Wagnerian influence that had previously dominated his work. However, the quartet was met with disappointment from musicians.

Undeterred, Dvorák reworked the slow movement of the quartet as a standalone Romance for Violin and Orchestra or piano. This revised version was first performed in 1877 to great acclaim. The Henle Urtext edition of this violin masterpiece is further enhanced by Antje Weithaas' nuanced fingerings and bowings.
