Description

The dedicatee of the first edition, "Pauline, Countess of Abegg", was a romantic mystification of the name of Meta Abegg, a friend from Schumann's youth whose surname inspired him to compose a theme on the notes A-B-E-G-G. This "rewarding and sparkling piece", as described by a contemporary critic, makes high technical demands but is distinguished by a youthful freshness and ingenious virtuosity. With this work, which Schumann considered his first worthy of publication, Henle has now issued revised versions of nearly a third of Schumann's piano works, incorporating the latest scholarly research. The thoroughly revised musical text is complemented by an informative preface and detailed commentary.
