Description
In a 1905 letter to his publisher and friend Jacques Durand, Debussy confidently predicted that his "Images" piano pieces "can hold their own and will assume a place in the piano literature" - perhaps "to the left of Schumann or to the right of Chopin," as the listener prefers. Debussy's prophecy proved accurate, as the "Images" have become a staple of the piano repertoire. Notably, the slow movement "Hommage à Rameau" was inspired by Debussy's 1903 attendance of a performance of "Castor et Pollux" - an example of the composer's innovative yet tradition-conscious approach.
