Description

The name Widor is so closely associated with organ music that his substantial body of compositions for other instruments can be easily overlooked. However, his Suite for Flute and Piano, likely composed in 1877, stands out as a remarkable work within the chamber music canon.

This late Romantic piece is expertly crafted to highlight the expressive and tonal capabilities of the flute. It is no coincidence that the work was dedicated to Paul Taffanel, the preeminent French flautist and pedagogue of the time, who gave the premiere performance in 1884. From its debut, the four-movement Suite has been widely acclaimed and is now considered a core work in the flute and piano repertoire.
