Gade: Selected Piano Pieces

Author : Niels Wilhelm Gade

Description

Niels W. Gade, who occasionally substituted for Felix Mendelssohn as conductor of the Gewandhaus Concerts in Leipzig, is widely regarded as the most significant Danish composer of the 19th century. In works such as his "Spring Flowers" op. 2b, "Aquarelles" op. 19, and "New Aquarelles" op. 57, Gade created supple, expressive piano pieces in an intimate style well-suited for domestic music-making. Although these character pieces are of moderate technical difficulty, they captivate listeners with their powerful originality, deeply sensitive expressiveness, and pianistic ingenuity. For pianists seeking to explore beyond the established Romantic piano repertoire, this edition of Gade's works will prove a rewarding and illuminating experience. The informative preface has been written by Danish pianist Bengt Johnsson, who has recorded Gade's complete piano output.
