Niels W. Gade, who occasionally substituted for Felix Mendelssohn as conductor of the Gewandhaus Concerts in Leipzig, is widely regarded as the most significant Danish composer of the 19th century. In works such as his "Spring Flowers" op. 2b, "Aquarelles" op. 19, and "New Aquarelles" op. 57, Gade created supple, expressive piano pieces in an intimate style well-suited for domestic music-making.
