Bartók's Sonatina drew upon various Romanian instrumental folk melodies. In 1915, the piece gradually developed from a series of piano transcriptions of these folk tunes into its final three-movement form. This Urtext edition, published prior to the Complete Edition, features an outline of the work's fascinating genesis by Bartók expert László Somfai. Somfai also explores Bartók's later revisions, which included changes to the tempi and fingerings. Additionally, the edition provides guidance on interpreting Bartók's complex piano notation, informed by the composer's own recordings.
