Description
Bartók's four-movement Suite op. 14, composed in 1916, remained one of his favorite piano works throughout his life. Unlike his other piano compositions from this period, the Suite does not incorporate any folksong melodies or folkloric elements. Instead, Bartók strived to achieve a new, more "abstract" and transparent piano style, free from ornament and embellishment. This Henle edition features an appendix with an additional Andante movement that Bartók had originally intended to precede the Scherzo, but removed shortly before the Suite's publication in 1918. The Urtext edition of this significant concert repertoire work adheres to the musical text of the Bartók Complete Edition, edited by the preeminent Bartók scholar László Somfai, who also provides a comprehensive introduction and interpretive guidance.
