Description
Haydn's "London Symphonies" represent the sublime culmination of his symphonic works. Composed for the London impresario Johann Peter Salomon, Haydn himself conducted the premieres of these twelve symphonies during his extended stays in the English capital in 1791/92 and 1794/95. Symphony No. 103 in E-flat major, the penultimate of the London Symphonies, is distinguished by its unique opening - a solo timpani roll that ushers in the slow introduction. This "Intrada" opening, marked with a pause, often inspires performers to venture a short timpani improvisation. This study edition, based on the authoritative Haydn Complete Edition, provides an informative preface and critical report, making it an ideal companion for both Haydn enthusiasts and newcomers.
