For fifty years, Henle’s edition of the Beethoven sonatas has been widely acknowledged as the definitive starting point for any serious examination of these compositions, often referred to as the “New Testament” of piano literature. With the recent release of the three Op. 31 sonatas in newly revised individual editions, we are elevating the standard even further. Notably, the esteemed pianist and conductor Murray Perahia has, for the first time, consented to share his fingerings and, as a co-editor, to impart his deep understanding of the sources to music enthusiasts worldwide. The musical text has been meticulously prepared in accordance with contemporary Urtext editing principles, and the volume is complemented by an extensive and informative preface, along with detailed notes on sources and alternative interpretations.
