Amy Beach holds the distinction of being the first American woman to achieve recognition as a composer of large-scale art music, earning acclaim during her lifetime as the leading female composer in the United States.

This collection features five contrasting pieces, all composed entirely in the treble clef and characterized by their light textures. Among these works, the Minuet and Gavotte draw inspiration from the Baroque suites that Beach, originally Amy Marcy Cheney, studied in her youth. The remaining three dances include a waltz, a march, and a polka.
