Description

The combination of Bach's compositions and Busoni's masterful piano transcriptions is enough to quicken any pianist's pulse. Busoni's transcriptions managed to preserve the essence of Bach's original works, written for other instruments, while also showcasing the full expressive and technical capabilities of the grand piano.

In 1900, Busoni's transcriptions of Bach's C-major Toccata, BWV 564, and the Organ Toccata in D minor, BWV 565 (now firmly attributed to Bach after some uncertainty) were to culminate his reworkings of Bach's pieces for Breitkopf & Härtel. Busoni viewed these toccatas as the pinnacle of his achievements, informing his publisher that they were "obviously the best among my works of this kind" and that he was "confident in expecting they will make a strong impact."

Endorsing the assessment, G. Henle Publishers presents the renowned D-minor Toccata and Fugue in an attractive Urtext edition. This edition has thoroughly consulted all available sources and features fingering suggestions by the acclaimed pianist Marc-André Hamelin.
