Description
Ravel's composition, dedicated to Gabriel Fauré, opens with a quote from Henri de Régnier: "The river god laughs at the water as it tickles him." He expressed a desire for the piece to be performed with the same flair as Liszt's works, and while the technical demands reflect Liszt's influence, the overall sound and clarity are distinctly impressionistic. The piece incorporates elements such as polytonality, flowing arpeggios, tremolos, trills, double notes, and a variety of extended chords, including major seconds, sevenths, and ninths, creating a rich tapestry of musical textures.
