Description
Brahms held a deep appreciation for Johann Gottfried Herder's collection of folk poetry, Stimmen der Völker in Liedern (Voices of Nations in Songs), which inspired him to compose the Ballade, Op. 10, No. 1, drawing specifically from the 'Edward' ballade within this anthology. The other three Ballades in Op. 10, however, do not reference any specific performer, allowing for a more nuanced exploration of each piece and their interconnectedness when presented as a cohesive set.
