Description

After relocating to Vienna in 1781, Mozart returned to his hometown of Salzburg only once, from late July to late October 1783, accompanied by his young wife Constanze. The events of those months remain largely obscure, and Mozart's compositional output during this period appears to have been minimal.

The sole products from this Salzburg sojourn are two exquisite duos for violin and viola, which Mozart apparently composed as a favor for the ailing Salzburg composer Michael Haydn (younger brother of the renowned Joseph Haydn), who was unable to complete a commissioned work.

Henle's Urtext edition of these duos is based on the composer's carefully notated autograph manuscripts. Notably, the first published edition did not emerge until 1792, shortly after Mozart's death, casting doubt on its reliability as a primary source.

In addition to a complete musical score of this intimate chamber music, the edition includes foldout instrumental parts, facilitating comfortable performance.
