Description
Liszt composed the pianistically demanding studies "Waldesrauschen" and "Gnomenreigen" in 1862 in Rome for the Große theoretisch-praktische Klavierschule by Siegmund Lebert and Ludwig Stark. This was during the composer's mature late phase, a time when such virtuosic pieces were not necessarily expected. Liszt had made a pledge some time earlier to contribute these works, which were published in 1863 independently of the Klavierschule. The studies were dedicated to his extremely gifted pupil Dionys Pruckner, who along with other Liszt students often performed them in concerts.
