Description
In 1884, Grieg composed a suite in the Baroque style to commemorate the 200th birthday of the renowned Norwegian poet Ludvig Holberg. Drawing inspiration from Holberg's era, the suite features traditional Baroque dance forms and structures, such as the Prelude, Sarabande, Gavotte, Air, and Rigaudon. However, Grieg combined these historical elements with the melodic and harmonic language of the 19th century, as well as his own distinctive compositional style. This fusion results in the charming and popular character of the work. While the string orchestra version is more widely known today, Grieg originally wrote the suite for solo piano.
The fingering provided in this Urtext edition is designed to help pianists navigate the dense and often polyphonic nature of Grieg's piano writing.
