Description

Kreutzer's "40 Études ou Caprices" for violin, published in early 1806, are the most comprehensive collection of studies from his pen. Originally comprising 40 études, the collection has grown to 42 over time. These études are the product of Kreutzer's years-long employment at the Conservatoire de Paris and represent a systematic and complete reappraisal of essential violin technique, making them an indispensable tool for every serious violin student at the conservatory level. In the two centuries since the Parisian first edition, numerous publishers have reprinted the études, frequently adapting them with revisions by famous soloists and teachers. Just a few years after the initial publication, Kreutzer himself published a complete revision, exchanging or heavily altering certain études. This second version forms the basis for the present Urtext edition, which also incorporates variants from the early edition. Violin pedagogue Ingolf Turban served as a consultant for this edition, providing modern markings to create an ideal foundation for contemporary violin instruction.
