Description

In contrast to the keyboard virtuosity of Mozart, Haydn was not known for his piano prowess. While Haydn did conduct his orchestral works from the harpsichord and perform his own piano sonatas, he did not share the same ambition to be a renowned concert pianist. As a result, only three piano concertos by Haydn have been passed down to us.

Of these, the Concerto for Piano and Orchestra in D Major, Hob. XVIII:11 is the most frequently performed. Its catchy, fresh melodies, harmonic nuances, and clear classical concerto structure make it a standout work. However, the occasion for which it was written and the year of its composition remain unknown. The preface to the piano reduction edition published by G. Henle Publishers examines these questions in detail, as it is based on the musical text from the Haydn Complete Edition.
