Description

Joseph Haydn's "Paris Symphonies" were composed in 1785 and 1786 for the Parisian Masonic lodge "Société Olympique," which maintained a large orchestra and regularly hosted concerts. These six works are notable for their artful motivic development and playful wit. With these symphonies, Haydn paid tribute to the discerning tastes of the Parisian audience and the excellent abilities of the orchestra's musicians. The symphonies rapidly gained fame and popularity across Europe, thanks to published editions in Paris, Vienna, and London.

In the D-major symphony from 1786, the slow movement titled "Capriccio" is remarkably free in form, and its introverted mood contrasts sharply with the exuberance of the other movements.

This study edition faithfully reproduces the musical text from the definitive Haydn Complete Edition, ensuring the highest scholarly standards. An informative preface and brief critical report make this score an ideal companion for all Haydn enthusiasts, both present and future.
