Description
Bach likely composed his six violin sonatas between 1717 and 1723, during his tenure as court Kapellmeister in Köthen. Rather than simply adding a solo violin part to a bass line, he opted to write out the harpsichord part in full, suggesting a shift away from the Baroque trio sonata model.
The sonatas were not published until 50 years after Bach's death. Transmission of the individual sonatas is sometimes problematic, as only limited autograph material has survived. This Urtext edition includes various alternative versions of different movements in the appendix.
