The Drei Notturnos, composed in 1850, exist in two distinct versions: one for high voice and piano, and another for solo piano. The piano solo version is preceded by the song texts, including "Hohe Liebe," "Seliger Tod" (both with lyrics by Ludwig Uhland), and "O lieb, so lang Du lieben kannst" (text by Ferdinand Freiligrath). The third Liebestraum, firmly rooted in the nocturne tradition, is one of the most frequently performed piano pieces of all time. This enduring popularity is in part due to the work's pianistic brilliance, which allows skilled amateur pianists to tackle the virtuosic challenges.
