Description
Liszt's piano rhapsodies continue the tradition of his operatic and song melody transcriptions, but use folk dances and songs as their source material. Completed in 1864, the Rhapsodie espagnole is a late reflection of Liszt's extended travels to Spain and Portugal in 1844-45. Inspired by two popular Iberian dance tunes, Folia and Jota, the piece showcases virtuosic presto rhythms and tonal colors in its finale. The long-inaccessible autograph manuscript of this composition is now available again, prompting G. Henle Publishers to revise their Urtext edition.
