Description
This academic-critical edition relies on all known sources, both printed and handwritten, that have survived for these commonly performed works. By thoroughly examining the source material, the editor has uncovered intriguing discoveries that significantly contrast with previous versions of these works. Instead of relying primarily on Le Clerc’s 1740 publication of Sonatas I to VI – likely produced without the composer’s approval – the editor has investigated the manuscripts from Naples and Wiesentheid that were created under Vivaldi’s direct oversight.
The editor has also successfully uncovered a previously unrecognized source for Sonata RV 44. Every deviation from the sources in the printed text and all editorial modifications are documented in the critical report. Cellists therefore have immediate access to all alternative interpretations, encompassing omitted measures and the numerous unavoidable differences in articulation. An informative preface delivers crucial insights into sources and their evaluation, while a segment on performance practice presents helpful recommendations on interpretation.
