Vivaldi understood the technique and distinctive characteristics of the cello, and composing for it appears to have evoked in him a unique empathy: there is a level of seriousness and expressive depth that is found far less consistently in his violin compositions. It may relate to the cello's deep tones, as comparable characteristics influence his compositions for bassoon.
