Description

Prokofiev's Second Violin Sonata was initially composed for flute and piano. Created in 1943, the Flute Sonata op. 94 quickly captured the attention of violinist David Oistrakh, who proposed adapting it for violin. Prokofiev agreed, and together they revised the solo part for the violin. This version was published in Moscow in 1946, while in the United States, it gained recognition through an edition prepared by Joseph Szigeti. The new Urtext edition is edited by violinist and musicologist Viktoria Zora, who has extensively researched Prokofiev's violin sonatas, examining original sources from both Russian and international archives. This effort has enabled the production of a source-critical edition that rectifies numerous errors and ambiguities found in previous versions. An insightful preface by renowned Prokofiev expert Simon Morrison provides context regarding the sonata's intricate development.
