Description

Prokofiev's "War Sonatas" (Piano Sonatas 6–8) were composed in Russia during the hardship of World War II. Of the three, the Seventh Sonata is the most famous, with its striking features: the hasty, unsettled first movement marked "Allegro inquieto," the lyrical second movement theme, and the relentless, machine-like finale. Premiered in 1943, the Sonata was awarded the prestigious Stalin Prize (second category), earning Prokofiev's household a substantial 50,000 ruble prize. This new Henle edition, based on a critical review of all available sources, presents Prokofiev's iconic work, accompanied by a preface from the leading Prokofiev scholar, Simon Morrison.
