Description

Debussy had originally planned a cycle of six sonatas, but was forced to conclude it with the third due to his serious illness. While the Cello and Piano Sonata, as well as the Flute, Viola and Harp Sonata, were quickly composed in the unusually fruitful year of 1915, the Violin Sonata posed difficulties for Debussy the following year. He struggled particularly with the finale, only completing the work in April 1917 to send to publisher Durand. However, the challenges of its creation are soon forgotten when listening to the resulting masterpiece, which Debussy himself described as displaying "perfect classicism" and being "full of life."
