Description

When Haydn transitioned from the harpsichord to the fortepiano in the 1780s, he discovered a rich palette of sound colors and dynamic variations at his disposal. He enthusiastically employed these new tonal capabilities in his C-major Fantasy, composed in early 1789 during a "whimsical hour." Haydn intended this standalone piano piece to appeal to both "connoisseurs and amateurs" alike, in part because it was "not too difficult." This edition, which follows the musical text of the Haydn Complete Edition, features historically accurate fingerings to help players fully explore Haydn's pioneering experiments with the evolving sounds of the piano.
